AMELIAS’S RESTAURANT 311 Preston Rd, Coppul Moor, Chorley PR7 5DU

We were invited to Amelia's restaurant by friends.  There was a surprisingly good choice of vegetarian and vegan meals on offer which generally is unusual. The proprietor is almost vegetarian – she eats a little meat occasionally. She says their wide veggie/vegan menu was brought about by her being frustrated by the lack of choice on offer in some restaurants.  Many places don’t make an effort or would offer to rustle up something as an afterthought as a  consequence she has now put together a lovely vegetarian/vegan menu, which would delight anyone looking for that something extra.

The restaurant is not that far from the M/6 motorway, taking junction 27 and drive taking around 7 minutes, so if you are on your way up to North or  heading South this may be an option for you. Take a look – it’s quite an impressive menu and no need to faff about looking for decent vegan food!

April - May 2011

SPRING SUNSHINE

This really is the best time of year especially now as the good weather prevails. In April we have great  anticipation of what is to come.  This year the Rapeseed  fields are not  in abundance as they were last year in their dazzling acid yellow brightening up Spring. The rotation of crops has seen the yellow disappear and has given way to a more subdued but no less beautiful Spring season.

I took these  pictures in early April one morning when I opened the curtains, and then 3 weeks later when the blossom and buds and green leaves were emerging, absolutely divine!

We are now on FACEBOOK please support and interact with us by ticking the "like button"  and/or make comments

We welcome any feedback from all our customers and any suggestions for bags going forward. For example, would you like to see eco-shopping bags and beach bags which seem to be very popular with people searching the net. Designer handbags will always be expensive and there are quite a few high profile vegan designers in The States which has a very healthy vegan market.

Cruelty free is of course a niche market and can have it's limitations with ongoing demand, so thank you for the customers who have supported us since 2008. There are customers  of course who want to buy beautiful animal friendly bags even though they are not vegetarians/vegans, but want to buy ethical lifestyle products.

NEW ARRIVALS ECO-GEAR OUTDOOR BAGS 20% discount promotion on EcoGear bags this week

EcoGear Outdoor Bags
We have decided to expand our range of bags to include outdoor practical gear, with eco-friendly and recycled materials.  They have everything  for your everyday practical needs and can be used for many purposes.  Be it travelling, student materials, outdoor pursuits, or just plain shopping, whilst still animal friendly.  EcoGear has gained quite a reputation in the USA .

Potted history of EcoGear

The EcoGear founder got his inspiration when on holiday in 2006. With a background of concern  about the future of the planet, his children and with the environment in mind, on returning from his holiday he set about creating a series of eco-outdoor bags.

Quote from EcoGear "Our statement is in the bag," EcoGear uses planet friendly materials, PVC-free, chlorine free, no dioxin phtalalates, or heavy metals. EcoGear uses recycled plastics, toxic free dyes and components. EcoGear use an alternative to PVC creating bags coated with EPO, an environmentally eco-friendly material to PVC. So they are clean to recycle creating natural occurring emissions when burned and safe manufacturing and consumer use.

Still animal friendly of course!  Because of the success of EcoGear in the states we would like to promote these eco-outdoor bags in the UK by offering a 20% discount of all these new items

ETHICAL  FASHION

NATURAL COTTON COLOR  (Co.)

The Natural Colour Cotton Company is  an emerging company and their designs are appearing now in many  countries. Take a look at this fabulous collection. http://www.fashioninquisitive.com/2011/01/fashion-rio-winter-2011-natural-cotton.htmI The group Natural  Cotton Color, works exclusively with fashion products made from cotton that is  naturally dyed. The product is developed and has the support of the  Brazilian Agro company – EMBRAPA, who developed the type of naturally colored  seed, which exclude the need to use chemical dyes, hence saving 70% of water  which would be used in the conventional production of cotton and jersey.

Natural cotton Color supports disadvantaged groups and poor artisans in Brazil.Their products are sustainable and environmentally friendly

I visited the Fashion  Forum in London last October, where many ethical stores were promoting and  displaying their wares, including the Natural Cotton Color Company. It was  very interesting meeting many ethical companies all under one roof and  showing what can now be achieved in the fashion industry, promoting Fair-trade  and ethical fashion. Ethical fashion is no longer a small sideline, but  growing in interest. The Natural Color Cotton Company is growing and  evolving company and I wish them the very best in promoting their brand  awareness.

Hello

We are now well on the way into the Winter.  A severe frost came overnight (2c), still it's very beautiful, but very cold underfoot.  The dog loved the frost - the field seemed to be abundant with "wildlife smells" as she scurried with great excitement to and fro. I missed taking photos of the Autumn colours this year -  suddenly Autumn was over and the trees were bare!

Many special offers.

New and changing stock is continually coming in.

FORMER US PRESIDENT BILL CLINTON CHANGES TO A PLANT BASED DIET

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R3ied_AD4iE

Here is an interesting U-tube Video of  President Bill Clinton interviewed on by CNN  praising the health benefits of a  plant based diet and how there has been  25 years of research behind the benefits of a vegan diet.  Bill had a life threatening heart problem and a diet consisting of many beef burgers while on the go. He wanted to be around for his family so made this lifestyle choice.

Tribute to a friend's old timer MAGIC

My friend Carol has just recently lost her horse at the grand age of 37, a cheeky chappie with a stubborn streak.  All Carol's animals seem to live to a ripe old age and Magic survived last years severe winter. Magic, lost his old pal recently in the adjacent stable to him.  He passed away in his sleep - a couple of months later Magic passed away the same way, very sad but that's the way to go. Carol has now taken on another challenge - an ex-racehorse called Corona. He has a lovely nature but is very feisty! Here are photos of the two of them. Magic is the one of the right.

My neighbour also has a very old a grumpy pony (likes the sheep but not horses) He is also in his 38th year.  She thought he was on his way out because he stopped eating and lost weight. After quite a few tests nothing could be found - then they discovered it was his teeth.  Happily this was sorted and he is thriving once again!

The Mini a fun car!
We were out for a Pizza  a few weeks ago  when I noticed this original 1960's version of the Mini as  I parked my car.  See how the mini has evolved in size and bulk.  It's not everyday you park next to an original version of your car and in the same colour!  My Mini One is still a small car, (but brilliant to park) and although it holds four people the rear seats are tight fitting. Technically it has obviously much improved and the 2010 version displays a retro dashboard with a large clock which I love aand I also love the nippy way it gets around town and country.

Now they have brought a further version of the Mini - the Countryman now being advertised on the TV.  Some say it's technically the size of a hatchback and has increased much in size since it's original version.  So is it really still a mini? - it just keeps creeping up in size. Here is a review by Brett Fraser in The Telegraph, published on the 26th August 2010.

Dining at the VANILLA BLACK RESTAURANT IN LONDON
Vegetarian restaurant
http://www.vanillablack.co.uk/

We took a taxi to  the Vanilla Black - the taxi driver said "it's tucked away", just off Chancery Lane. Tucked away in a quiet but studio-esque like street we arrived at the Vanilla Black on a Friday night, a Birthday meal with my husband who is a non-vegetarian. The restaurant had a cool sophisticated atmosphere with a minimalist feel, incorporating clean lines, with varying grades of colour from off white to grey/blue and dark indigo blue.

The staff were very professional and attentive guiding us on the right choice of meal. The whole ambience was quite up market and the food was magical.   My choice of  starter was beautifully presented  and so was the main course. The desert came and they very kindly printed in icing "Happy Birthday".  My husband thoroughly enjoyed his meal and the ambience and certainly didn't miss the meat. People seem to linger for quite some time looking reluctant to leave. The food had ambitions for Michelin Star qualities - delicate portions of delightful tastes, not overwhelming but just perfect.

Hope to visit again on our next trip to London

Best Regards Eileen

British Butterflies

We have had a lot of rain here over the last two months - probably more than other places in the UK and the poor vegetable plot has been abandoned. I'm not very good at gardening with constant rain. Recently I was inspired  by  radio request from the British Butterfly Conservation society for people to take note of the various butterflies now in the garden. I went out and took some photos  just outside the patio doors, where the Buddlia Bush (butterfly bush) and the herb Oregano are now flourishing and which these pretty and valuable insects adore. I noted of (see enclosed photos) 10 Peacocks, 1 Red Admiral, 1 Gateman and 2 small whites. They are just so uplifting to watch. The British Butterfly website has all the pictures to identify the butterflies you may have in your garden. If you would like more information on these lovely creatures and how to encourage and preserve them for now and future generations - because the are now declining - please visit the British Butterfly Conservation  Society.

Old Dotty  Rescued Hen, nearly 12!

I wrote about Old Dotty reaching 10 some time ago - shes still here. She  is now eleven and a half, twelve in December having survived this severe winter which is amazing.  She struggled one  freezing day and wouldn't leave an island of earth, sheltered by bushes and surrounded by snow   When it was getting a little dark, I had to persuade her to go into the coop. She was not having any of it.  She wouldn't cross the snow.  Fearing she would freeze to death as temperatures plummeted to minus-8, she retreated back into the undergrowth   We tried several times to capture her and eventually we did, but the brambles took their toll on our skin, but we are so pleased she has reached this grand age and still lays the odd egg.

May/June 2010

This is the best time of year in the UK.  I took a trip over to Formby, a very nice place to be on the north west coast. Ormskirk  to Formby is a rural flat landscape which has  luscious black sandy soil to grow the best vegetables.  On the way I was uplifted by the acid yellow Rapeseed crop shimmering in the glorious sunshine.  Not everyone likes it but I find it lovely. The vibrant yellow was around every bend. I would love a handbag to match the crop!!

My favourite tree at the moment is the Wisteria - lilac drooping flowers hanging from the Pergola - I obtained a cutting from my neighbour's garden 12 years ago and it has only just flowered in the last 2 years.  Spring is so inspiring for fashion designers.  You can get many ideas from observing such beautiful form and colour.

January 2010

It’s a long cold winter this time around.  I walked the pup for 8 weeks in October and November in the pouring rain.  Since then I have ‘skated’  my way along the same path.  Pup loving it, but me gripping onto the nearest fence.  Despite the underlying treachery the snow has been  beautiful, but we are awaiting it’s departure, hopefully soon.

This month we  would like to introduce Fair-trade bags imported by a lovely family run business in Devon called Natural Nomads, under the BAFTS Fair-Trade banner. The materials are animal free and are made from Wild Nepalese Hemp which has naturally occurring imperfections. Adding Fair-Trade items is part of our policy.

BLUECOAT GALLERY IN LIVERPOOL

Because I am involved with the Liverpool Printmakers  I would Just like to mention the Bluecoat Gallery Printmakers. There is a currently running exhibition by 6 artists at the Unity Theatre on Hope Place.  Great part of Liverpool to visit – the hub of creativity, where nearby is the Liverpool Philharmonic and the Everyman Theatre on Hope Street. From Hope Street you can see the two catherals.  Also I think I spotted a series of Hollyoaks being filmed in one of the popular coffee venues! The Unity Theatre itself has a great schedule of acts organised in the coming months.

Some prints have familiar scenes of Liverpool.

MISCELLANEOUS

I just have to mention - the cheeky chaps in my household.

Morris my 6 year old rescue cat (from the Cat's Protection League) many years ago has had his nose put out when  a new pup arrived 3 months ago. He has stayed well clear from the torments of the pup, until now. He has decided he has had enough and has now returned to his favourite place on the sofa and will take no more nonsense from Tess (who is now 6 months old) He loves his comfort and Tess  the spaniel has accepted this and allows him the space, at last.

Here we see them both for the first time in three months enjoying each others company.

BIOFAIR FAIRTRADE QUINOA ORGANIC RICE

A mention goes for this discovery of Biofair Fair-trade Organic Rice Quinoa Fuselli 250gms, priced  £1.99 at Waitrose.  It is produced by Windmill Organics.

I bought the above by chance from Ocado/Waitrose and it was delicious.  Quinoa is an excellent source of protein.  I normally use Quinoa seeds/grain in pasta, but after discovering BioFair Rice Quinoa, which is like pasta, I was thrilled that it could be used  with vegetables  and acquire that high quality protein that is needed with every meal.

Scrumptious!!

VISIT TO THE ANGEL INN IN AT HETTON, NR SKIPTON YORKSHIRE

Just to give The Angel Inn in Yorkshire a mention.  We visited there over the summer
and it is a special place to visit.  The vegetarian food is lovely and the menu
changes over the seasons.  If you eat in the pub it has a nice atmosphere. It's a
traditional pub with rich wood panelling surrounding the bar and bar restaurant. It
also has a restaurant, but the pub setting  is my favourite. There is also a full vegetarian
breakfast in a delightful breakfast room.

It is a great place for walkers  with many different routes.  There is access for
walkers across the farmers fields for miles - if of course you have the energy.
There is a fabulous large atmospheric pond down the road which  belongs to the local
wild ducks and the colours at this time of year are stunning.

For that special treat you could try out one of the lovely bedrooms, which are
beautifully and traditionally furnished.  Please see the photographs. They also have
a wine cellar to explore.

Here is also a sample vegetarian menu for you to glance over.

August 2009

Regardless of the British rainy summer weather, change your thinking of Britain.  Think of it  as 'brooding', atmospheric, interesting and unpredictable.

Just look at this dynamic photograph taken about 2 weeks ago when this amazing sunset with a 'Lord of the Rings' mist appeared and the moment was to be experienced in all it's glory!

We took around 20 photographs across the fields and here is an example. The colour!!

Despite the very reasonable and affordable price Big Buddha boast a high-end style appearance, comparable in quality with many pricey designer handbags.  Because of demand in the US, Big Buddha has now opened it's first store in Florida 2009.  They are doing wonderfully well.

Stand out in the crowd with any of one these ethical bags because they are scarce, so far, in the UK!
Happy shopping!

Thoroughbred Rehabilitation Centre (TRC)   19th August 2009

I would like to give a mention to the hard work done by Carrie Humble and team at the TRC Rehabilitation centre in Lancashire. The TRC was established in 1991 and gained charitable status in 1993.

The TRC provide a rehabilitation centre and a safety net for many ex-racehorses. Many ex racehorses may find their way to auctions and be unsuitable buys for some owners, because of intense racehorse training there really  needs to be a period of transition. This is where the TRC come in.  They also organise fundraising events throughout the year, bringing about an awareness of the plight of ex-racehorses. For Carrie and her team of helpers this involves a long challenging, but rewarding and costly journey of rehabilitation.  Vet fees can be expensive. Because of the credit crunch many of their regular donations have been lost because of a shifting of priorities that can occur in times of a deep recession.

Finally, once the racehorse has been rehabilitated the focus is on finding the right horse to match the owner. They are a passionate group of people dedicated to the process of rehabilitation and care of the ex- racehorse once it's racing career is over.

NEW TECHNOLOGY - faux fabrics are becoming more interesting

Certain polyurethane fibres from Italy are producing softer fabrics, which are more breathable and lighter in weight. New technology involving mixing synthetics polymers with natural materials such as wool and mohair are providing new insights. (Not suitable for vegans)These innovative and inspirational ideas are heading in a much-improved way forward. More designers are now seeing the benefit of cruelty free fashion and much research is going into finding new directions.

THE BRITISH BUMBLE BEE

Active ImageI have noticed less bees over the last two years.  They are so important to our lives more than you know.

Spare a thought for the Bumble bee, they are diminishing in numbers by the bucketful.  What is happening.  The opinions are that it is the use of pesticides and insecticides and possibly global warming.  Changes in agricultural practices are possibly becoming harmful to the bee.  Britain has 25 different kinds of Bumble bee all working their little hearts out, gathering nectar and pollinating plants and trees.  There is a crisis going on which is blighting the humble bumble – and should we be bothered? Absolutely! There has been a devastating impact on the immune system of the bee and wildlife experts are discovering dying colonies with viruses and diseases. A collapsing colony brings no pollination and therefore no crops. Many farmers are now concerned for their crops.  In order for crops to flourish in the fields we need the bees.  With the disappearance of local bees from the fields farmers have had to import bees. The new bees are found to have more aggressive foraging techniques and may therefore prey on native species. There is also the possibility of the new immigrants being infected.  The fragile Eco-balance is being disrupted by these changes.

Good news - subsidies are now in place to encourage farmers to replant hedgerows encouraging wildlife by setting down grassland and seeding wildflowers.

Contact: http://www.bumblebeeconservationtrust.co.uk/ for more information.

Active ImageI took the picture above 2/3 weeks ago of an early bee nuzzling a dandelion.  The only dandelion in the field at the time – we are now overrun with them!

Also this sunset picture was taken just before the clocks went forward.  We seem to come out of the dark once the clocks change!!

MAY 2ND 2009

New sandals arriving shortly from the animal friendly designer Rina Shah.

March 2009

Spring is almost upon us, which is always a time for renewal. It has been a long winter. The coldest for 13 years, but we appear to have had more sun this winter than that of the summer of 2008 and 2007 for that matter.

The new range of bags and wallets are truly lovely, a wide range of colours to brighten up our days. If there is any colour or design you particularly have a fancy for in Big Buddha or AmyKathryn it may be possible to acquire that special bag you have your eye on. Please let us know by e-mail and we can see what we can do.

Because Feelgoodhandbags is aB ritish website I thought I would look at some of the nouns used to represent handbags and bags in general. Many Americanisms have entered into the British English language for some time and we accept this but don’t completely know what they represent. According to Wikipedia in American English (AE) a ‘purse’ is a small bag, also called a handbag or pocketbook. In British English (BE) a purse is a small container similar to a wallet.

In Britain words to describe bags like Hobo and Tote are familiar but not what is normally used to describe handbags.

The Hobo can be a style of handbag or purse. The Hobo is usually characterised by a crescent shape, slouchy, casual, soft and pliable material with a shoulder strap. In all cases it is a fashion accessory. There is an almost a romantic connection between the American hobo – the “tramp” and the bohemian look that the hobo bag brings and celebrities tend to like.

Active ImageActive Image

The Tote is a large open handbag/bag and it’s origins – an Americanism (1895-1900).

The Fashion Tote elaborates on the basic Tote noun by providing a design element that allows the handbag tote to be transformed into the most up-to-date fashion accessory.

HARE POPULATION

Active Image The Hare population have been disappearing over the past 50 years, but thanks to around 60 farms across Britain taking on the ‘habitat scheme, WildCare’ the countryside is becoming more friendly towards the diminishing hare.

The fields surrounding us has been left chemical free for over 10 years; natural meadow grass and many insect friendly weeds have been carefully left to accommodate the wildlife and as a consequence this has been very beneficial to the visiting wildlife.

Last year for the first time hares were seen on many occasions speeding across the fields with full energy and vibrancy. We look forward to seeing once again this activity in the coming Spring. Fortunately we are now seeing an increase of 35% in the hare population compared to this time last year.

JANUARY 2009

After the Christmas frenzy and uncertain times being positive is important.  Being positive is something we do well at feelgoodhandbags.  Despite the frost and ice the sun has been in abundance here and hopefully with you too.

To remain positive and  to cheer up the winter we have introduced some exciting new bags from the Big Buddha Company and Amy Kathryn (arriving shortly).  Also, new designs are coming in from the ever popular ESPE handbags and accessories.

BIG BUDDHA BAGS

Big Buddha produce wonderful vegan leather bags and their creator is the designer Jeremy Bassan. The bags are made of good quality synthetic leather.

Jeremy Bassan is from Santa Barbara in California.  This young ambitious designer is responsible for the state-of-the-art styles we see emerging from the Big Buddha Company. Big Buddha is also eco-friendly, affordable and fun. Jeremy Bassan has ‘hands on’ involvement in the process of every aspect of production and keeps Big Buddha  at the cutting edge of design and style by continually evolving to meet the demands of the twenty first century woman. The handbags are made for women of all ages and can be used for all occasions from classic to playful, always meeting the changing fashion trends.

Since it's launch there has been tremendous press coverage for it’s ‘stand out’ style and versatility.

Big Buddha handbags are recommended by The Professional Vegan Blog,

Break over the New Year

On a break over the New Year period, we ventured over to County Wexford at the Southern tip of the Irish coast. It was interesting to compare the magnificence of the Pacific ocean in California (we spent some time there last Autumn) to the brooding atmosphere of the Irish Sea in Winter. Our accommodation was just a few minutes away from the beach.

All this is the setting for the images of ‘Charlie’; a cross pointer, who has the personality and build of Scooby Doo. I wanted to give him a mention because we are an animal friendly site. He belongs to our friends and he is in his element on this beach.

Charlie (seen in the pictures) swims across a stretch of deep water about 25 metres from the sea.  Charlie has a very short fine coat and we were worried the freezing water may have seen him off, but no he continued to dive in and swim many times.  His energy was relentless!  In fact on our return home and in the warmth his coat dried out to a very glossy finish.  Maybe it would have done us all good to plunge into freezing water for a few moments it certainly would have blown all our troubles away, at least for a short period.

BRIEF FASHION NEWS

Fashionable Hairstyles
The zeitgeist style of Amy Winehouse has gone with the exit of 2008, so the rumour goes from those in the know in the high places of the  hair fashion business.  The latest styles for 2009 are worn by Russell Brand and Diana Vickers (from the X-Factor 2008).  Will the poker straight hair of recent years be a thing of the past! What do you think? Are you going to give this new style a try!

Exhibition of Hats
An International collection of hats is being exhibited at London’s V & A museum.  This is a  collaboration between the milliner Steven Jones and the V & A.  This exhibition is an anthology of over 300 hats from the beret of Marlene Dietrich to the straw hat of Cecil Beaton. Other styles that can be seen are those of Audrey Hepburn in My Fair Lady and the catwalk creations of Christian Dior. Looks very interesting.

On from the 24th February until the 31st of May 2009.

AMY KATHRYN

“We are animal friendly and eco-friendly in our materials and attitude” Quote from Amy Hall.

The designer Amy Hall is responsible for the stylish bags of Amy Kathryn.  She was raised in Phoenix Arizona.  Hall has an academic CV in Art History and Anthropology.  In her early career she designed fabrics and accessories. Amy has an excellent pedigree in design.

Each bag is hand printed with beautiful patterns on fabric. Amy Hall’s inspiration was born out of childhood memories of the changing interiors she was brought up with.  The hand printing of her bags may vary in shade, which makes every handbag unique. The sensational colours chosen are found in nature.  The fabrics are combined with animal friendly faux leathers.  Her customers include many celebrities.

For the future Amy Hall will seek to manifest her desire to incorporate her eco-friendly philosophy into all aspects of production and design.

NOVEMBER 2008

The Newsletters will cover  the latest news at feelgoodhandbags, and other topical issues generally. The latest items in stock will be explained.  I may also cover animal related issues, reviews on services and products available.

The new product list continues to grow. ESPE wallets in particular have been very popular and have been selling quickly.  They are vibrant and quirky and would make great Christmas presents.

The lovely Doy bags are colourful, strong, vibrant and very reasonably priced. They are quite unique and of course help to sustain the communities with work for the women's cooperative in the Philippines.

CALIFORNIAN TRIP

Carmel Water

October 2008
I was very fortunate to have been in  California in October, driving along the beautiful Californian coastline named the  'Big Sur', taking in the magnificent air of the vast Pacific Ocean, one of the loveliest sights I have seen.

Santa MonicaThe sun on the water is dazzling . It was a holiday, but I also was able to see suppliers.

The presidential election campaign was at fever pitch while we were there. An interesting local campaign issue in San Francisco  was vote (now) for the end of factory farming hens.  They are doing their best!

On our journey along the coast we stopped at a  viewing point on the way from Monterey to Cambria. Many people had gathered to watch the Elephant seals sunbathing on the shore. So many of them.  It was such a delight to see, and friends of Cambrian wildlife are very protective of them.

The Elephant seals land onshore to breed and conserve energy. Already fed from their last hunting expedition they don't eat again until they go out on their next hunting trip.  The information sign said not to approach them at close quarters as they may become startled and use up their precious energy, which is of course, their valuable fuel for breeding and hunting.  The seals didn't seem to mind a bit that they had a big audience. They had the appearance of teenagers lounging around and chilling out!  It was a thrilling experience to see so many.

Code of Conduct for Pet Owners

November 2008

One last little snippet.  The UK government are introducing a code of conduct for owners of pets. The government is looking out for the pets of the UK and issuing guidelines for owners to provide a suitable environment for your pet to live in.

Could this mean a more cosy life for your pussycat and trusty best friend, an improved diet, better beds and blankets. The conduct code will provide advice on improving the lot of the pet.   The "cat" document goes into 26 pages. Including guidance on stimulating and entertaining Tigger.

Leaflets will be published of guidelines, but for misconduct, as yet no fine is forthcoming, but for a serious breach of this code evidence of cruelty may be used  when matters become serious and a court case is looming. This can only be good news.

Well done Hillary Benn (Cabinet Minister)  who has instigated this conduct code.

SHOES are Launched

We are launching a very exciting range of shoes from Ragazzi.  Fashionable as well as animal friendly and comfortable. The look, feel and philosophy of Ragazzi could change the mind of the most staunch leather wearers!

No animal-by-products are used in the making of Ragazzi shoes.  This business has been born out of a need to make positive and ethical changes and to bring about an awareness  of  the process of manufacturing, both for animal welfare and human rights. Ragazzi shoes carry the Vegan Society symbol.

It was a case of moving the goalposts to accommodate this new philosophy.  Fashion and ethics combined.

The shoes are lovely and even better than we see in the pictures. The shoes are manufactured in China and the saying goes "No Animal, No Sweat". Once again animal welfare and human rights are in the foreground.

The company use manufacturers with good work standards and practices.

Rescued Hens

Dotty the battery hen and her colleagues arrived here in 1999, bought from a factory farm.  I was shocked and appalled by the conditions when I arrived to collect them.  A depressing experience.  But that is another issue and another story.  Apparently they live in these cages, hardly able to move before they are slaughtered at around 40 days.

I took two white Sussex and two black Marans.  The Sussex were sickly birds from the beginning and did not live long, while the two robust Marans lived on another eight years for Big Betty and Dotty is still with me at almost ten! And still lays the odd egg.

The hens have such characters and Dotty remains the top of the pecking order and commands respects from the younger group who give her much space.  They will not eat until Dotty has finished.  She is amazingly fit for her age running across the field at some speed with her younger family.

Dotty and the late Big Betty were very competitive when they were in the throws of their laying career.  They both clucked at a high octave in the early hours waking us from a deep sleep..

Sample ImageOne time I was sitting at the table in the garden, while the hens were all perched on the lower panel of the fence, fluffy bottoms facing my way. They were into the serious business of grooming when a little feather popped out and suddenly in that same moment a little Jenny Wren swept by and grabbed the feather, I presume to feather her own nest.  Recycling at its best! At that point I wish I could have had my camera. A wonderful moment to observe.

In July of this year the fox came – three times exactly. In ten years I have never seen a fox here and suddenly they are in abundance.  Fortunately for the hens I had purchased a run with a roof, preparing for bird flu if it was to appear in the UK. This apparently  saved them from the hungry fox.  The hens woke me in the very early hours with an hysterical plea to save them from this frightening predator.  With a clap of the hands from a bleary me, the fox shot off shocked at being spotted so early in the morning!. Thank goodness Dotty and her friend live on! Hopefully old Dotty  survives another winter.

Dotty and her friends are fed on an Allen & Page diet of organic pellets and mixed corn.  They are also allowed to roam freely (which has it risks!) The eggs are taken by friends and family, and just like any other pet they are taken to the Vet when things go wrong.

Finally the hens love tasty treats: cheese, wholemeal bread and apples.  It’s like the January sales when these treats are given. Grabbing a juicy morsel and running like the wind away from the others.

The Beginning of Feelgood Handbags

Sample ImageIn recent times I had become a little frustrated by what was on offer for vegetarians  I have been a vegetarian for quite some time and I had accepted that leather handbags and shoes were the only items available on offer at present.

You could buy synthetic bags and shoes, but the quality was never there and you did not know if they were completely without animal products.  Synthetic bags and shoes were just a cheaper alternative. Fashion never came into it.

Now things are beginning to change.  Gradually, more products are emerging.   I  am able to go that one step further in lifestyle changes.  Many vegetarians in the past, including myself accepted the ‘by-product’ of the meat industry without challenge. But in fact many animals are actually slaughtered for their skins. Many people would benefit from buying animal friendly products, (not just vegetarians) as it gives  a ‘feel good’ factor to your purchases. Its an ethical choice. Also buying Fair Trade as you know, benefits whole communities and allows many to earn a decent living as well as being creative.

Its not just about playing the part of Neil in the ‘Young Ones’ for anyone that has seen the sitcom in the early 1980s  - hippy Neil! Gentle Neil was the but of all the jokes….we have moved on!  Its actually now more about getting a feeling of satisfaction when you make ethical purchases.  Making small changes.

Susan Nichole’s handbags, an animal friendly co, sells to mainstream shops in the USA and are adored by the general public and bought by a cross section of people, for their quality and design.

English Retreads was founded in the early 2000s by a vegetarian named Heather English.  Again she was seeking something different from what was on offer. These bags are cool and trendy and brilliantly adapted by recycling inner tubes and converting them into dynamic bags.  They are both fashionable and enduring.  Some of these bags have travelled some 60,000 mile before arriving on your shoulder.

More designers and companies are producing cruelty free products and the quality is very good.

The Fair Trade jewellery and bags on Feelgoodhandbags, is very unique and stylish, all made by small communities.  The suppliers/importers create the designs and employ skilled artisans to bring the jewellery to fruition. The small jute fair trade bags are hand painted and  ideal for keepting small items secure and close by.  More Fair Trade bags and jewellery,  will be added to the website in the near future.

Fair Trade

Click on image to preview! The addition of Fair Trade bags, is very satisfying.  The Pratiba Paris bag is just one of many lovely bags produced by Conserve; a non-profit organisation, providing an income for the urban poor in India.  The recycling of polythene bags uses much less energy compared to conventional methods and creates no pollution.

Also, the Jute bag is a great environmentally friendly material and is very durable. The large bags from importers Bindibazar hold a great deal. The smaller ones from Jungleberry are compact and can hold your small personal  items close to hand.

Supporting  Fair Trade communties is a worthwhile cause.

Lancrigg Hotel

I visited Lancrigg Country House Vegetarian restaurant  in August of this year. Lancrigg  House hotel is steeped in history and the surrounding countryside is magical.  Sloping hills and lovely country walks, dreamy shaded pounds, with a landscape incorporating the gentle flowing Easedale hills and stunning scenery.  It is quite remote, with a 20 minute walk from the  Hotel to Grasmere village green. You can take the quiet country road or choose a meandering path.

The food at Lancrigg is superb, prepared enthusiastically by vegetarian and vegan chefs, who provide a wide variety of dishes which delights the palette, using the finest organic ingredients, with an international vegetarian cuisine.  Who needs meat!  The hotel provides a fresh supply of organic seasonal organic food.  The restaurant has a good atmosphere and is very relaxing.

The Easedale scenery is an inspiration to contemporary writers, poets, artists and musicians. And of course its history is fascinating as it became a meeting place for literary giants like Wordsworth and many other intellects of that time (1840s)  and also has connections with Charles Dickens, as well as other famous historical figures like Florence Nightingale and Charles Darwin.

On our ramble around the Lancrigg estate we were very fortunate to come across some red deer, nervous and fast moving. Twice, we were so lucky.  They can be shy and timid animals.  As we were wandering on the path a red deer swept down the bushy hill across our path and over a high fence, with grace and speed. It continued to run with elegance across the field where it eventually came to a stop near the brook and turned its head to look back at us.  Quite surprisingly, it did not hide itself from our view but cheekily stood its ground with a confident stare. The whole area is teaming with wild life.

The hotel caters for Vegetarians and Vegans, but I would recommend Lancrigg’s delicious cuisine to all. You’ll enjoy the experience.
